One key issue that should be addressed is that some people may have some pre-conceptions about joining a self-help group, and may find it hard to take the first steps to join. Sometimes becoming a member is not always a straight forward process, if we examine the case study of Mick and Owen who both have haemophilia, they was both unsure about joining a self-help group at first. Mick found about a self-help group in his area from a flyer and his first thoughts were that he didn’t want to go and that everyone would be self-pitying, while Owen wanted nothing to do with sufferers and felt if he went it would make him a weak person. Both say that the idea of meeting other people in the same situation wasn’t attractive as they thought they’d be meeting people who wouldn’t be able to offer what they felt they needed. Mick in the end went to the group and said it was the best weekend of his life and that it was nice to have people to relate to, while Owen said he learnt a lot about himself and that he found it very helpful
