Both texts explore key ideas about society by exploring the way we react to certain circumstances. Growing Old with My Appliances covers the way society feels about consumerism and buying excessively and RGB show the ideas of greed and wanting more than we are allowed to have. The two texts explore the key ideas by using techniques such as, analogies, colour and sound.
Growing Old with My Appliances conveys society as people who consume excessive amounts of products that we just discard as we grow older. It uses analogies to explore society compared to objects aging. The analogies show similarities between the speaker and his appliances. They show how both the speaker, is without family, and his appliances are lonely and not used as much as they were when he just bought them. It also shows how society consumes without thought on whether the product would be of much use in the future.
RGB describes society as greedy and wanting more than we are able to have. The short film uses different colours to represent the different offers that we receive in life, that we can’t take in at once. As the man consumes all the colour pills at once, he faces the consequences because of his greed. The soundtrack of the short film is mostly melancholy music which can show how the way society is known for its greed is “sad”.
Growing Old with My Appliances and RGB both convey clear ideas about society through showing the way we act in different situations. They both uses techniques to reinforce these ideas in the work. The poem and the short film mostly describe the effects of consumerism and the key ideas about what it labeling society as.
