E.E.Cummings is an American poet who is remembered of his unique poetry style; his poems always involve and discuss the themes of love and life. His literary works are always written in lowercase, with unconventional punctuations, and "incorrect" syntax, usually that gives a distinctive voice to the poems. Kanye West on the other hand is a popular American rapper and artist ‘I carry your heart with me' written by E.E.Cummings and ‘Love Lockdown', a song by Kanye West shared a common theme – Love. Through the use of a variety of techniques, love is expressed in two different ways and various aspects of love are explored.
In the poem ‘I carry your heart with me', it is interpreted as a love message from Cummings to his lover, the phrase "I carry your heart" works as a metaphor or a symbolism of love and means that he is very aware of his lover's feelings and keeps them close to himself, also a hyperbole which the level of love is enhanced. Noticed that he added a message in the bracket which reiterates his feelings of love for his lover. It highlights Cumming's selflessness and obsession about the relationship. There's a repetition of ‘I', creating a sense assurance and engagement, adding power to the poem so it is more convincing. Such as"(I carry it in my heart)" and "(anywhere i go you go, my dear...)". In the second stanza, Cummings shows that how much his lover means to him. Metaphor is widely used to compare his lover to different things and exaggerate the importance of his lover to him. "I fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet)" and "i want no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)". The repetitions of ‘no' point up his selflessness again as he states that his fate and literally everything belongs to his lover and that his lover is so divine who is beyond the moon and the sun. "you are whatever a moon has always meant and whatever a sun will always sing is you" The personification makes the description of his lover's brilliance more effective. The third stanza include considered one of the best metaphor ever used in poetry "here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud...grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide" conclude his feelings toward his lover which is the deepest secret. Not only as deep as the root, but the root of the root. The hyperbole adds depth to the secret in the bottom of his heart, which nobody knows. But because it is too powerful, the power is incredibly big and strong that can keep the stars apart. "this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart". It cannot be hided anymore. Eventually he reveals the secret "I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)". It suggests and signifies that love is such a simple thing but it's extremely powerful.
