Individuals in the book Raw go through highs and lows during their stay in an institute known as "The farm". The farm has had different impacts on many individuals affecting them in both a positive and negative way.
The positive effects of the farm are that inmates learn to be responsible for their own actions, learn new skills which help them prepare for the road ahead and most importantly change their attitude. The negative effect is that the inmates have to fit themselves in an environment that has harsh rules that strictly must be followed.
An example of a positive effect is when Brett is seen in a situation where the inmates are allowed to go on a rodeo. Frog was unable to handle the freedom he was given and gets into trouble with a drug dealer, this is when we see Brett for the first time look after someone other than himself, he protects Frog from getting himself into more trouble, taking responsibility not only for himself but for someone else. "Give it back to him, Robbie," Brett warned, stepping forward. This illustrates the positive effect the farm has had on him teaching him to become more responsible and more caring by looking out for one another.
The negative effect is when Brett has to fit himself into the farm. Brett does not want to abide the harsh rules that are set on the farm, does not want to take orders from Brett and has a fight with Josh. Brett decides to escape that night showing that he has had enough of the farm.
