Natural Soothing Relief for Headache Pain
Although headaches are not usually life threatening, they do take a physical, emotional and financial toll on people’s lives. Tonight I’m going to not only tell you what could be triggers but demonstrate how to work on yourself and others in order to rid the pain of a sinus or migraine headache.
The American Migraine Foundation has reported that Thirty-six million Americans, that’s about 12% of the U.S. Population suffer from migraine headaches. Placing them as one of the 20 most disabling medical illnesses on the planet, costing the U. S. more than $20 billion each year, attributed to: doctor visits, medications and indirect expenses such as: missed work and loss of productivity. (American Migraine Foundation)
I’ve been doing massage since I was 12 years old, after reading books my mother had provided and then told me to practice what I’ve been learning. I’ve been doing just that ever since, including working on the Dallas Cowboys and their families back in Dallas, Texas.
Who here has ever had a sinus or migraine headache or know someone who has had them? Wouldn’t it be great if you could lower the amount of time spent with this pain, enjoy your life more without being confined to the bed in order to escape from the agony. Did you know that there are many headache triggers such as: high levels of serotonin, dietary, environmental, hormonal changes, and physical smells, just to name a few. Though things don’t cause headaches, they do induce the chain of events that produce a headache in certain people. (Sheen) (Shreyashi)
There are a variety of treatments, such as preventable medications in tablet form, nasal sprays, herbal supplements, chiropractic, hypnosis and hands on, according to Diseases and Disorders: Headaches (Sheen)
Tonight, I will be demonstrating how to rid not only headaches on someone else but by applying these same techniques you too can help relieve some of the pain from your own headache. Though it is harder to relieve ones-self than someone else.
Though no materials are really needed for a massage, I like the person I’m working on to be seated in front of me. It is important to start out with clean hands, and a nice relaxed state of mind plus I like to use a little but of Lubriderm lotion. (Even people with allergies seem to be okay with it.) I put a nice glob on my clean arm so I can easily go to it without disrupting the flow of the massage.
Whom would like to be a volunteer for tonight’s demonstration?
- So my hands are clean, and I’m just going to ask you to sit down and put your bum as far back into the seat.
- Put your head back on me and let me do all the work.
- I first start out by opening up the person to massage, one never wants to rush into such matters; prep is needed to let the body respond.
- I do this by first slowly working on the left temple, working the three main points by giving a light pressure of circular motions; directly across from the eye, where you feel the indentation. The other two points are directly above and below that same point.
- After a moment of that then cross over to the other side and do the same, but never lifting both hands off the person. One hand should stay on the subject at all times, to keep the person from not shocked at the next touch.
- Then I’ll roll on to the center and then down to the chin by going behind the ears, just to draw up again in order to slightly push the head downward.
- This action will draw your thumbs up into position to the top of the person’s spine.
- Most people will forget this area. Start out putting a little pressure and then a little more firmness to it.
- Now glide your hands down the bottom of the neck and start with a crisscross going along the spine moving upward back to the hair line. You’ll want to do this a few times. But never over work an area for it can do more damage than good.
- Also never pinch the skin for you can cause pinched nerves. I’ve seen and have felt a lot of massages that the masseuse it unaware that they will be causing the person more pain even a day or two after the massage. So remember there is no pinching in massage!
- Now we draw the persons head back onto us, rotating back into the temples on both sides.
- Bring your hands back down past their ears and below their chin, while telling the person to close their eyes. Then go up again lightly to place your fingers on the upper inside of the eyes where we work along the brow line. Slight pressured circles with a lift and down as you go along the brow until you reach the temples, then release by going back down the ear line.
- Now you’ll want to bring your thumbs up onto the inside of the eyes and the bridge of the nose and slowly go down the nose and into the bottom of the cheekbone.
- Then back to the eyebrows and the temples and again with small circles and then a few pulls across the forehead with the last one going down passed the chin, then bring your arms back up while slowly pulling the head up, but remember gently. You’re done.
It’s important to not only wash your hands and arms before the massage but after as well in order to rid yourself of their energy and be clean. I’ve created a small package for each one of you if you’d like to try this technique on someone or with modifications to work on yourself. When working on yourself you’ll want to focus mainly on the facial points. Don’t worry about the neck because you can use stretches instead of massage to help you relax.
