Profile Essay
It was the last few days for many in my home country Nicaragua before moving in to college, and it was no exception for my best friend Sofia Pasos. She had been working non stop every day for the whole year to finally reach her live long dream of being admitted to Georgetown University. I can even recall how she would constantly have panic attacks because of thinking she would never get admitted, she often said things like “I will never get accepted, come on its Georgetown, and its me who we are talking about”. Finally, the day the letter came arrived and she told me to open it for her. Just the smile I had on my face gave me away and she instantly hugged me and began to cry of happiness, she called it the best day ever. So it was in the last week before leaving to college that changed her dream forever.
It was August 13, I was leaving the next day and so were many of our friends. There was a big farewell party going on that night and I called Sofia to ask her if she wanted to go. She is not much of a party person and she hardly ever accepts invitations but this time she wanted to go and say goodbye. A couple of friends came over to my house before the party, and I told Sofia to come. She is that girl that likes to hang out more often with guys than girls for the simple fact that girls are more dramatic, and she hates drama. Sofia came over and soon after we left to the party. We were having a great time, well at least I was, and there I saw Sofia seated with some friends at a corner so I walked towards her. Most of the time she is seated far away conversing and never hangs around were the party is really going. As soon as I got where she was she grabbed and told me please let’s leave. I told her “No, I am having a good time, if you want to go then leave”. We got into a discussion that turned into a fight and she ended up walking away. I knew she was going to say sorry soon after because she always turns up really quick, but let’s it go even faster. 20 Minutes later, as I expected, Sofia called me saying that she was leaving home already and told me not to worry about her. I called an end to the night and left home. When I was getting ready for bed I received a call from a friend who usually wouldn’t call me, specially at that time of the night. Santiago sounded very confused and he told me that he had been in a crash in which the car flipped and Sofia was in that car with him. He told me she had a broken knee and they were on there way to the hospital. I ran upstairs to wake up my mom, whom loves Sofia as a daughter of hers, and explained the little I knew about the accident and we drove to the hospital. I came in to emergency and she was being transferred in a bed to surgery. I ran towards her and asked her so many questions in so little time, but all she did was ask about the rest of the people in the car. She didn’t even bother her broken and popped out knee, or even the fact that she was about to go into surgery; she just cared for her friends.
