Raymond Carver's "Mine" and "Little Things", a play on words or a descriptive title? It could be said, these two stories are identical. While I was reading them I did see the drama unfolding but not until the last sentences did I understand the real story at hand. Each story describes a situation that leads to the fighting over a child. When describing the genre, I would have to say it is a dramatic writing with a sub genre of a tragedy. While the drama unfolds it's not until the last do you understand the roles and consequences of the story. The titles play a vital role in discovery of the stories true meaning. Each story had very few changes to the overall text but the tile will cause you to reflect upon each one in a different way.

"Mine" is the classic confrontation between two adults acting as if they were children again. This story shows that even as adults we will resort to our childish tactics to get what we want. ‘Mine" shows the dynamics between the two parents. It is an adult version of a childhood battle—"It's mine." "No it's not, its mine.". Two adults selfishly fighting over something they both would like as if it were a play thing. In this version of the story, the two people fight over a possession and the most important fact is to ensure the other does not get it. They are not interested in the fact the possession each would like is a child. Their only goal is to ensure they are the one with the possession in the end. This shows they have become the very thing they are fighting over, a child and have lost all their reasoning capabilities.

"Little Things" is written in more of a descriptive way. The writer actually uses the word "little" while describing the story line. Each use of the word "little" allows the reader to catch on to the title and to ensure the title has meaning. The writer uses "little" to allow the
