Conradin was ten years old and , according to the physician's professional opinion , the child would not live another five years. It was a friendly doctor , ineffective , little is taking into account , but their opinion was supported by Mrs. De Ropp , who was taken into account. Mrs. De Ropp , cousin of Conradin , was his tutor , and represented to him the three -fifths of the world that are necessary , unpleasant and real , the other two-fifths , in perpetual antagonism to those , were represented by himself and his imagination . Conradin thought I was not far off that would succumb to the pressure dominant and wearisome necessary things : disease, excessive care and endless boredom. His imagination , fueled by loneliness kept him from succumbing .
Mrs. De Ropp , even in times of greater candor , admitted that it had not wanted to Conradin , though she might have been able to realize that to counteract it " for their own good " fulfilled a duty that was not particularly painful . Conradin hated her with desperate sincerity , he knew a perfect disguise . The few pleasures he could procure acrecĂan with the prospect of upsetting her cousin , who was excluded from the kingdom of his imagination for being a dirty object , inadequate.
In the sad garden, guarded by many windows ready to open to tell him not to do this or that, or remind you that it was time to eat a remedy , Conradin was little appeal . Further back , in the shadows, was a box divided into two compartments , one with bars placed close to each other. Here was a great ferret marshes, a friend, butcher dependent , smuggled , cage and all , in exchange for some silver coins that you saved for a long time . Conradin was very afraid of that animal flexible, sharp fangs , which was , however , its most precious treasure . His presence in the box was a source of happiness and terrible secret , which was carefully concealed from wing woman , as he used to call his cousin . And one day , who knows how he imagined for the beast a wonderful name , and thereafter swamps ferret was to Conradin a god and a religion .
