The Hazards and Safety Risks of Driverless Cars
An autonomous car( driverless car, self-driving car) is a vehicle that is capable of seeing
its environment and navigating without human input(autonomous means having the power of
self-governance). While handicapped and elderly people would differently benefit from
driverless cars, self-driving cars are far too dangerous to allow because of technology errors. In
a event of an accident who would be responsible? Driverless cars would also take the fun out of
driving and motion sickness would be a bigger problem.
There are many arguments when it comes to driverless cars, some people argue that
driverless cars would make people more productive because there wouldn’t be anymore
slogging through traffic. Instead, you could spend your time going through your emails,
making phone calls, or checking the news. There also wouldn’t be any more frustration
when trying to find a parking spot in a packed mall, but does the good outweigh the bad?
Firstly, one of many issues for me is motion sickness which will be more of an issue in
self-driving vehicles than in conventional vehicles. I believe I’m not the only one that will say
being the driver helps with motion sickness not only are your eyes always on the road, but I
know exactly where the car is going because I’m the one controlling it. According to a research
survey done by Brandon Schoettle who has a B.S. in Biopsychology and Cognitive Science, and
Dr. Michael Sivak who has a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, “By switching from driver to
passenger, by definition, one gives up the control over the direction of motion, and there are no
remedies for this,” they wrote. The lack of control over which way the car moves, and the lack
of warning before the car, for example, makes a sharp turn, is likely
