In Wash, the writer, William Faulkner, used third-person narration and mixed up the past and present time to describe the story’s plot—the change in Wash’s spirit and his attitude towards Supten. The main point of the story is the feeling of betrayal could not only could destroy everything but also give people power.
The loss in faith is the radical reason why Wash changes completely in both his spirit and action. In the past, “A fine proud man.” this is what Wash uses to describe Supten, and he thinks God is “what He would aim to look like”. Although the war is failed, he still meets Supten with “a little servile, a little familiar”, the image of Supten in Wash”s mind does not change at all. Even he notice the ribbon on his granddaughter’ waist, “I hope you minded to thank him” he said. However, everything is change at that instant.“Well, Milly, too bad you’re not a mare”, the words smash everything Wash had—the faith.
It seems that Wash is a puny and timid man, but he is not. When he finally realizes that the hero in his heart is just a man who look him as a trash, he raises the scythe and kill the man who he had admired. He does not escape, because he knows “If he ran, he would merely be fleeing one set of bragging and evil shadows for another just like them.” After killing his granddaughter, he lights the fire and fearlessly rushed to the soldiers. Though he died, he uses his last strength to protect his dignity.
In our real world, things happen the same as the story. There are many ways could let me feel betrayed, such as the betray of my friends, family members or even myself. The most simple example is idiohypnotism, which means we cheat or persuade ourselves that everything would be fine , and the things would go the same as what we expects.
