Compare between Ancient Spartan and Athenian
Ancient Greece was surrounded by Mediterranean Sea. It is comprised with many of city-states, called poleis. Each polis had its own government, education, and customs, although they have same language and religion. Athens and Sparta were most famous and powerful city-states. Sparta’s army was fierce and protective however Athens have strong navy.
Athens government was classified as a direct democracy. Athens claim to be th birthplace of democracy. Council of 500 was charged with administering decisions made by the Assembly. The Assembly was open to all citizens. They passed laws and make policy decisions. Women did not participate in the political life of Athens. Spartans are usually classified as an oligarchy, but it had elements of monarchy, democracy, and aristocracy. Two kings who were generals in command of the armies and with some religious duties. Also women did not participate in the political life of Sparta.
Secondly, in Sparta girls were able to learn a lot more than in other places. Spartan girls were not taught just by their mothers like in Athens. They received training in sports, such as the javelin and running. The Spartans believed this made them strong and better mothers. And Sparta is the best polis of ancient Greece in woman because they had freedom. They could also leave the house without their husbands’ permission unlike the poor women of Athens. This is most likely because Spartan husbands were off to war so often that the women could never find them to ask permission. Women in Sparta had to be strong and in charge in order to keep the city going while the men were off fighting in all the wars.
