The Cold War fought between the communist and the capitalist was a war that lasted for 20 years. Although the USSR which are the Russians and the Americans that weren't fighting each other directly, they used other methods and people to fight their war for them. This was known as a proxy war. During the Cold War, the Americans and the Russians used other countries to fight their wars for them, they would send some troops over to help assist in the war but there was never any country attacking them directly. They would have to send troops over to foreign lands to help fight the war. In Russia's case it was the Afghanistan war and in America's case it was the Vietnam War.
The Vietnam War was a very special war. It was the first of its kind. It was one of the first wars where the loser was actually the country that won all their battles. The U.S.A. actually won most if not all of their battles as the Vietcong's weaponry and military training was not as good as the American soldiers or marines. In all the battles between the Americans and the Vietcong in Vietnam, there were a few that were documented and information was publicly released to the American population back in the U.S.A. One of these battles that information was publicly released back to the U.S.A. was the My Lai Massacre.
The My Lai Massacre happened on 16 March, 1968 in the South of Vietnam. During the Tet Offensive the Vietcong retreated and took refuge in the village of Son My in the Quang Ngai Province. In the village there was a number of specific hamlets within the village that was designated My Lai 1 to 4, it was suspected that it was harboring or occupied by the Vietcong. The US Forces planned a major offensive to make sure that they wiped out all the Vietcong in the area.
