Introduction
Tourism industry is a fast growing industry, but what makes traveling a unique and memorable one is the historic sites present to one destination to another. This historical site depicts the history of one tourist destination. Historical sites are being preserved due to its historical value. It is amazing how these sites are being preserved after all these years, different wars have pass, still, these sites are the remaining proof on what happened on the past years or maybe decades.
A local resident in one specific tourist destination’s involvement in the conservation of such historical sites is vital to ensure the protection and to attain sustainability of such destinations. But, sustaining one tourist destination, more like historical site is a very challenging part on the management of that particular place and the government. (Lwoga, 2016) Stated that local residents’ involvement in the conservation of one destination has factors, and this involves the attitudes, perceptions, emotions and values of the residents.
Here in the Philippines, specifically in Manila City, is where you can find various prestigious universities in the country, and University of Santo Tomas is one of them. This research proposal is to figure out how University of Santo Tomas stands out in terms of historical value and to determine the changes, challenges and current issues on the architectural historical site of the said university.
History
University of Santo Tomas (UST) is an oldest existing university in Asia. It is the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus. The institution was established by Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., and the third Archbishop of Manila. On July 24, 1605, he put an amount of one thousand five hundred pesos including his personal library for establishing a “seminary-college” to prepare young men for priesthood. His funds and his personal library led the start of the university.
