• 1985: Tosses a chair onto the Assembly Hall floor while Purdue’s Steve Reid attempts to shoot technical throws. He then suspended for 1 game.

• 1993: Knights pulls son Pat, a junior guard, from a game and appears to kick him in the leg

• 1995: NCAA reprimands Knights and fines Indiana for US$30,000 for his outburst toward NCAA tournament media liaison

• 2000: Sport Illustrated aired findings about Coach Knight’s verbal and physical abuse to IU’s player (incl. grabbing player Neil Reed by the neck)

•  Sept 2000: “Grabbing” IU’s student arm 4 month after zero tolerance policy released.

        “Discipline doing what you have to do and doing it as well as you possibly can, and doing it that way all the time”

“ Kids have to understand that you – you, the coach – aren’t going to be satisfied with just winning… Kids will be satisfied with what you tolerate. If coach tolerate mistakes, kids will be satisfied with mistakes”

COACH Knight: coaching method

• Fair (not play Favorites)

        “ If there’s a problem with Keith Smart, you are going to see his ass on the bench. That’s the way we handle ego in Indiana”

• Push his player hard with intimidating method and threatening tactics

 “When he’s calling you an asshole, don’t listen. But when he starts telling you why you’re an asshole, listen”

• Require 100% commitment from Player. Never less!

THE End period in Indiana university

• 2000: Sport Illustrated aired an investigation videotape

        → Resulted with investigation from Indiana University

        → Zero Tolerance Policy

• 2000: Fired due to “grab” IU student arm.

• 2001: Lead Texas Tech Basketball team

        → Win in 4 consecutive years.

        → earned 800th career victory

Coach K : Background

• Born in Chicago

• Enrolled US Military Academy (West Point), after graduated and served 5 years, he was hired by Bob Knight as graduated assistant at Indiana

• Recommended by Bob Knight to helm as coach in Duke University

• In 20 years leading the team, he earned 500th win at Duke

Coach K : Coaching Philosophy

• Simple and unregimented

• One Rule : Don’t do anything that’s detrimental to yourself, because if its detrimental to you, it will be detrimental to our program and Duke University

• Leadership:

Coach K : CAREER in duke

• Not only known as Coach, but also as tutor of Duke’s business school and as executive in residence at the Fuqua/ Coach K Center of Leadership & Ethics.

• Compensated to total at least $875,000 per year and also sign $ 1 million deal from Nike including $500,000 per year in 7 years and &75,000 annual for the rest of his life.

• Had turned down $40 million contracted deal from L.A Lakers due to his love to Duke. He said, “Duke has always taken up my whole heart. And no matter how good some other option was, to lead my Duke team with all my heart could only happen at this place.”
