Airasia BHD was originally a national carrier established by DRB-Hicom BHD in 1993 and commenced operations on 1996. The Chief Executive Ofiicer that time was Tun Sri Yahaya Ahmad who was also the CEO of DRB-Hicom BHD. After the unexpected death of Tun Sri Yahaya Ahmad, Airasia was plunged into a crisis and heavily debt which give Tony Fernandes the opportunity to take over the company and turn it into a low cost airline company on 2001. Acting as the Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia, Tony Fernandes completely change the organizational structure of the company by appointing Dato’ Kamaruddin Meranun as the Deputy CEO and Dato’ Pahamin Rajab as the chairman of AirAsia. He also brings Conor McCarthy, Aziz Bakar and John Framcis Tierney as the independent non-executive directors of the company. Over the years, Airaisa BHD has grown exceptionally well and enables them to expand their service to other countries especially in South East Asia besides Malaysia. As a result, Tony Fernandes has created more new position in Airasia organizational structure to support the company as they become bigger day by day. The position of the independent non-executive directors has been increased for 3 to 7 position and some new position has been introduced as well. New CEO for Airasia Indonesia, Airasia Philliphines, VietJet Airasia, AirAsia Thailand and Airasia Japan also been appointed to manage respective region so that Airasia BHD can offer their service much more effective in these regions. Head Director for finance and Strategic Planning, quality and Safety, Engineering, IT and e-Commerce, Commercial, communication, operations, Flight Safety, Airport and Public policy, Cargo, Flight operations and Go-Holiday also has been introduce during these years as Airasia BHD achieved more and more under the leadership of CEO Tony Fernandes.
