1. Do visual inspection on appropriate aircraft/mock up as assign by the instructor.

  • Cessna 182

2. Check for corrosion, indication of cracks and indication of a discontinuity/flaw which is shown in the form of oil or dirt which has exited.

  1. Crack and corrosion found at left horizontal stabilizer trailing edge. [pic 1]ji
  2. Dent and corrosion found at right horizontal stabilizer trailing edge. [pic 2]

3. Clean the suspected area with appropriate solvent as recommended by the manufacturer.

  1. Remove the area of corrosion with scotch brite.
  2. Wipe the corrosion detection area with wipe rag dip in acetone cleaning agent.

4. After cleaning, investigate the damage and surrounding area, and classified the damage in one of the categories:

  1. Allowable damage
  2. Repairable damage
  3. No repairable damage

  • Repairable Damage
  • A crack appearing in the web at the hinge fittings or in the structure that support the overhanding balance weight is not considered negligible damage,but it is repairable.
  • Skin patches illustrated in figure 18-4 may be used to repair skin damage between corrugations. Following repair the elevator must be balanced. If damage would require a repair which could not be made, damage necessitating a replacement of parts.

  • Negligible Damage
  • A any smooth dents in the skin that are free from cracks,abrasions, and sharp corners, which are not stress wrinkles and not interfere with internal structure or mechanism, may be considered as negligible damage.
