Over the last week we have been reminded that computers are a great asset not only to us as individuals, but also to companies as well. We also learned through the text and class discussion that there are other ways to produce reports without being dependent on one computer application because there are others that may be more suitable for our needs. Week two took our computer application and systems’ knowledge to another level introducing the concepts of databases, network applications and E-Commerce to us along side Microsoft Access and its many advantages.
Databases
Chapter four showed us how databases are used in the work environment. We were able see how to manage data and see the difficulties that accompany it. According to the text, in order to manage data it “should be of high quality, meaning that they should be accurate, complete, timely, consistent, accessible, relevant, and concise” (Rainer Jr.,R. & Cegielski, G., 2011). The database also has a Knowledge Management System cycle (also known as KMS) which showed us a cyclical functional six step system. The steps included create, capture, refine, store, manage, and disseminate knowledge. From databases we ventured to network applications.
Network Applications
Network applications in chapter five and nine enabled us to see just what is out in the world of computers to enhance our databases and work environment. Team A realized the four dominating network application were Google, Ask.com, Yahoo, and Microsoft Network. Another commonly used site is Wikipedia, and should be dealt with on a case by case basis because other individuals are able to utilize and alter data on the site freely. The text referred to it as “user beware”. It is mostly is used to serve as a go to for questions asked. Web blogging is growing and the simplest way to create a blog is through sites such as www.blogger.com or www.sixapart.com.
