'Vain trifles as they seem, clothes have, they say, more important offices than to merely keep us warm. They change our view of the world and the world's view of us ' said Virginia Woolf. In my opinion, fashion is a way of life, a living culture that shows the entire world that people still preserve their identity. Clothes are a social invention through which we express ourselves, our way of thinking and our behavior. I chose fashion as the core of my graduation thesis because I think it is a vast domain from which both British and American clothing have emerged. A comparison between these two would help us to attain a overview of the society nowadays. Furthermore, we take a look at designers that are in the public eye, and who have asserted themselves as icons.

‘A journey into fashion’ follows the paths of the design world. A glimpse that reflects the social, political, economic and artistic fields of everyday living in the British and American culture. Which is the impact that fashion has on people, and how do teenagers interact with it in both cultures are a few points that will be discussed in the ‘British and American designers’ chapter. There will be an analysis of the two currents, a comparison that shows how Britain and America develop their strategies in terms of design, consumers and society.

The ‘Fashion in the political world’ chapter illustrates the importance of image in politics. Whether monarchy or democracy, everyone knows that the clothes our political representatives wear are very important. Thus, we shall see the influences of designers in the politics, and the impact of this relation on the society.

Last but not least, the ‘brief dictionary of British and American fashion’ brings forward a set of specific terms that appear in both British and American civilizations.  A brief explanation of words that appear in the fashion field, and their usage in the daily life.
