The fundamental understanding of female genital mutilation will allow the clinician to address the emotional and physical needs of the children, girls, and women who have undergone this traditional practice or who are at risk for undergoing this practice. The practitioner to individualize the history and physical examination, and to provide appropriate management with recognition and treatment of complications. Increased knowledge of the laws against female genital mutilation will allow the healthcare provider to educate and advise at-risk girls and women as well as their parents.

Female Genital Cutting is the cultural practice of partially or totally removing the external female genitalia. This can get as bad at the vagina being stitched together so tightly that there’s only a minor hole opening.FGC is undergo on infants, girls and women of all ages. Its being performed in about 28 countries worldwide. Its mostly done before a girl reaches puberty or before marriage or a women’s first pregnancy. They performed it on little girls most because they are less able to resist it.

Female Genital Cutting is performed through central Africa, in southern Sahara and parts of the Middle East. About half of those live in Egypt and Ethiopia. The procedure for this is under four major types including, Clitoridectomy, Excision, Infibulations, and other. This is NOT part of any religion but condemned by many religious leaders. FGC is practiced because its said it will empower their daughters, ensure the girls marriage, and protect families name. its also preformed to keep a women’s virginity by limiting her sexual behavior.
