Topic: How do you define community service and what personal examples can you provide?

We all live in a community where interaction among people is very important. Every day we are affected by the actions of the people around us. It can have a negative impact on us or be a very positive impact. Community service is a good example of a positive impact people may have on others. Community service is service in which an individual or group may participate in as a way to help and benefit others. It can include things such as putting hours towards helping the needy, raising money for donations, or by serving as a mentor for purposes such as tutoring or counseling. Even the smallest actions, as long as some effort is used, can be considered as community service.

After I began attending the Bronx High School of Science, I joined a club called Key Club. The Key Club International is a high school program sponsored by the Kiwanis International. Its mission is to dedicate their time to perform acts of community service which include cleaning up parks, participating in walks, and organizing fund raisers for money donations. In addition to their acts of service, students experience team work, acquire leadership skills and understand how one person can make a difference in the world.

Through Key Club, I have participated in events such as the Breast Cancer Walk or the AIDS Walk. In both walks, I, as well as many other key club members, walked with a mindset that the walk would help others. We all had ideas that with each step we took we were helping another person fight against either Breast Cancer or AIDS. In addition to the Breast Cancer Walk and AIDS Walk, I also participated in the Key Club's JCC Wrap it Up event. In this event participants were given a gift, wrapping paper, and a piece of colored construction paper. Each gift was wrapped and each card was made, all with care.
