In criminal justice system, the goal of a law enforcement agency is ensure societies are in order by establishing policies, forcing citizens to obey the law, and apprehend those who violate the law. Law enforcement agencies duties are written by administrators, which pass new or amend guidelines that best work the needs of an area where local departments operate. To function successful within communities, police departments must be financiall capable of functioning by receiving funds and be able to manage a budget. The funds can be given by government, state, local officials and also through business. Sometimes the granting of funds is denied, and budgeting is compromise, which forcing changes to control the way money is spent.
The term “budget” is the same in every business. Administrators keep track of financial goal to purchase equipment, and accessories, hire employees, expand facilities, and to provide more programs. In criminal justice, budgeting is extremely important because it gives a department or agency room to grow, and to meet certain goals through funding from outside resources. Without funding, the purpose, and mission of department goals may not happen. The police chief of administrator may revert in other ways of maintaining budgets and may inquire delays of reaching goals.
The importance of funds:
The best police chiefs are never happy satisfied with the status quo and are always seeking ways to improve themselves and their departments. They also realize money is the fuel that runs their organization. To accomplish their goals, department heads must have sufficient funding. This funding is received through the budgeting process. If the department fails in the budgeting process, it is likely to fall short of meeting its goals later in the year (Orrick, n.d.).
Administrators do not have an easy task. They are busy with many duties and budgeting is the important one to them. The outcome of funds denied can cause administrators to change the department’s budget in cutting cost to save money and use it for the department’s goals. The budget cuts can be reducing posts or beats, equipment, services, facilities, and employees. This can cause eventually problems in providing services, and relationship with customers can be lost. Crime rates can also determine if funding should happen.
A good of example of budgeting issues is in an article post by The Dallas Morning News on a central prison unit Sugar Land in Houston, Texas. The prison is set to cut many of their services, including the possibility of closing the central prison unit Sugar land. The problem is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has fallen short with the budget and needs a way to acquire the amount of the budget by cutting cost in prison, instead of raising taxes.
