Many people think work is just a job and are only in it for the money. My past two jobs
were both an amazing experience. Working as a camp counselor at the YMCA and at Tim
Horton’s as a team member were both two experiences that I may never forget. These
experiences have helped me become the young man that I am today. The work world has helped
mold me into a well-rounded person as well.
Some people may think working with kids is a difficult task. Working at the YMCA as a camp counselor has definitely changed my life. Every morning at six in the morning my day would begin. I would wake up, get dressed, and then be on my way to the YMCA for a day of work. I would be there early every day because my mom would have to be to work at 7 in the morning. My shifts did not normally start until 9 in the morning so what did I do? I volunteered my time and helped with the morning activities. Every morning these kids that I grew up with were all so unique, energetic, and lively this early in the morning. This was the first year I wasn’t a camper anymore and I was in charge of these children that looked up to me as an older camper. I now had to be an even greater role model, now that I was a counselor. Each and every day I would learn something new. These kids in my group were all so special to me because I was helping them learn new things and getting them prepared for what is to come in their futures. This job has taught me many things as well, such as just feeling happy. There was not a day I would walk into the YMCA unhappy. The kids knew how to make you laugh and smile no matter what kind of day you were having. I have also learned to accept the simple things in life. Just a simple “good morning Mr. Justin” made me happy. It was just so nice knowing that a certain child would come up to me and go out of their way just to say a simple “hello”.
