In this day and age many employees in Western countries have trouble combining work and family loads. A survey among a representative sample of the US work force revealed that not less than 40% of employed parents feel that work interferes with their family life (Bond, Thompson, Galinsky, & Prottas, 2003). As many Western governments and companies acknowledged the possible threat of work-home interference for employee health and well-being, they introduced policies and arrangements that may enable workers to manage work and domestic obligations more successfully. Among these work-home arrangements, two main categories can be distinguished: (1) flexible arrangements, increasing employees’ flexibility regarding working time and/or working place (e.g., work from home work, and flextime; flexible start and finishing times); and (2) care-related arrangements, enabling employees to perform their care-giving responsibilities (e.g.parental leave, subsidized childcare).

The benefit of utilizing the flex time option for the customer service portion of the company makes for a more attractive offering. Companies that are offering flextime for their employees tend to have less employee call outs and less stress on their employees. Having that option gives more rewards to the employee. Having this set up for the company offers the company the chance to cut back on being overstaffed and utilizes the work force that they have in place.

It is also something that can be used as a rewards program for those employees that are performing above and beyond their capacity and that can also help cut back on the costs of paying out a bonus for a job well done. The employee will make it their business to try and outperform each other to get that benefit. While they are doing their job in the process they are answering more calls and helping to reduce the queue of calls that may be waiting. That helps the company to reduce its hold time and gives the company more calls answered.

An additional solution would be to offer work from home options. That option could be considered as a solution to cutting back on the costs for the company. Having a job perk added in the benefits such as the option of working from home can be an attractive look for any company that has the capability to offer it. Working from home can also be offered as perk to those that are top performers as well. Working from home isn’t an option that everyone would be willing to do, however there are some that would be very much interested in the concept and would work harder to be considered as a person that gets to work from home.
