The New York Times article Ugly Selfies by Jessica Bennett is probably one of the most influential articles for young teenage girls. Girls are used to going through multiple trails of find the perfect “selfie”. Teenagers fell as though they must fit in standards of mass media, but overtime have grown into a new, humorous habit. Stated by Cynthia Wade, “We spend so much time trying to hide our flaws because the culture has set it up that you have to be ashamed if you’re not perfect; They’re suddenly much more willing to embrace the ugly or ironic” (Wade 1). The quote explains the girls are starting to embrace themselves either with their “perfect selfie” or “ugly selfie” and are encouraging other girls that they need to do the same. Celebrities such as Lorde, Cara Delevinge, and Lena Dunham have helped the trend of “ugly selfies” flourish and have turned into a positive movement.
