Mexican-American War Mini-Q
After Mexico becomes their own country in 1821, they expanded into territory that America believed was theirs. While the Americans were upset with this, the war started after sixteen Americans were killed. This was the spark that started the war but the question is: were the Americans justified going to war with Mexico? The Americans were not justified for going to war with Mexico because American stole the land from the Mexicans, how United States Legislatures were against the war, and how Mexicans felt about the war. America had no reason to go to war with Mexico.
America stole most of Mexico’s land because the American’s thought that the land was there’s. The Americans thought that God wanted them to have that land. So they thought they had the right to take the Mexican’s land and that it was favor. In response to the Americans the Mexicans fight back to protect the Mexican border. Since the land was the Mexicans’, Americans had no right to the land.
Most people were against the Americans going to war but the war was conservational. Not only were citizens that were against it, so was a United States Legislatures named John O’Sullivan. While this was a part of Manifest Destiny, O’Sullivan knew that the land was Mexico’s land and it was pointless to go to war. Since part of the American government was against this a lot of people should’ve been swayed to take this side.
During the annexation of Texas and other states, the Mexican government felt that this was a declaration of war. When this was happening, the Mexicans thought that they needed to protect the border. So when General Zachary Taylor arrived at the Rio Grande he found Mexicans protecting the border. The Mexicans were justified doing this because “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler.”
