Modeling
Behavior changes are important to human development. When a person consciously exhibits specific behavior in the hope that it will be imitated, this is referred to as "modeling." The use of Modeling is an important skill, which can change the behavior of clients for a better lifestyle. Modeling, which is also called observational learning or imitation helps, to develop new behavior, attitude, value, and feelings by observing others. Modeling to a client must be a desirable for one to imitate. A client will imitate an action if one can find success out of it. The reason for this technique it allow Clinicians to motivate client to find oneself or one own style, rather than imitating the model behavior of others. Once a client is motivated with his or her own model technique the client will feel free to challenge his or her own style and take control of one behavior. Modeling can be done in several different ways such as participant modeling, convert modeling, live and symbolic modeling. Modeling has been used effectively to treat individuals with anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and conduct disorder.
Description of Modeling
Modeling therapy is based on social learning theory. Modeling technique has been used to eliminate unwanted behaviors, reduce excessive fears, facilitate learning of social behaviors, and many more. Modeling may be used either to strengthen or to weaken previously learned behaviors "Modeling."
Modeling is easy to use, is widespread, and is one of the oldest methods of changing behavior. However, modeling alone has not been shown to have a big impact or to have long lasting effects. Good role modeling shows the consequences of adopting new behaviors and encourages clients to plan for change. It can be made a much more effective intervention if used in conjunction with another behavioral intervention such as rehearsal and reinforcement.
The expected outcome is that clients will be able to Use modeling as a way to help change the clients behaviors. Modeling can be a helpful tool for any clinician, if used properly. Most people will agree that both clients and staff can be helped to learn new ideas and new behaviors by clearly identifying what is to be mastered and breaking it down into tasks and steps that use specific skills. These steps and skills are most readily learned from clear, consistent, and encouraging models with which there can be good natured exchanges in the process of modeling new behaviors. It takes time and effort for any person to change a behavior that he or she have become accustomed to, but with the help of a clinician and a strong desire to change, it can be done. Through practice comes proficiently.
