Monstrous Elements
What do you think would happen if we put a newly discovered element in our food supply? What if I told you that this new element is between two other elements on the periodic table that can cause health problems like lung disease and possibly death? Why would we want this in our food supply? Keep reading to find out.
One element is beryllium. Its color is a steel gray. It is strong and light weight. This element sounds great but, beryllium is a toxic bivalent element that can cause pneumonia if it is breathed in! This can also cause berylliosis. This is a lung disorder that can damage organs in the body like the heart. Beryllium can also cause damage to a person’s DNA.
The other element that is dangerous to the human body is boron. Boron is a non-toxic element. Most people take in an average of 2 milligrams of boron a day. This does not have a dangerous effect on most people but, if you have too much boron, it can cause various health problems. It can have a bad effect on the liver, stomach, kidneys, and the brain. Boron can also cause irritation to a person’s eyes, nose, and throat. Too much boron over long periods of time can lead to death.
I understand that the elements I have chosen to research have good things about them too. Beryllium is used in high performance aircrafts, satellites, and space crafts. It is also used in nuclear reactors, bicycles, and computers. Boron is used in glass bake ware like Pyrex. This makes the glass resistant to thermal shock so it won’t break under heat when baking.
The element that is between beryllium and boron on the periodic table is antarean. Now, knowing more about beryllium and boron and the dangerous effects they can have on the body why would we put antarean in our food supply? We don’t know exactly what effect antarean has on us but we do know that beryllium can cause lung disease and boron can cause other
