Multicultural Education

Interest in ethics and social responsibility in education has grown in recent decades. However, in the process of teaching and learning about ethics, important shortcomings persist, such as the fact that norms, principles and virtues are often taught separately from the subject matter and unfortunately only a few teachers in their academic activities address, the role of the personality of the individual in the development of a more just and equitable society strengthened in values ​​and morals.

There is growing awareness that we live in multicultural societies, although this awareness does not imply that it is encouraging the practice of values ​​that allow a coexistence based on respect, recognition of differences and the construction of dialogue between different cultures.

Multicultural education is not a unitary concept but a complex one, subsuming in it a variety of beliefs, policies and practices in education that seek to provide knowledge and attitudes in a multiracial society. Multicultural Education cannot be understood merely as an exotic addition of content to the Curriculum, but must be a systematic consideration of the perverse effects of racism. In addition, it must seek the implementation of pluralism and diversity in all educational proposals, gathering the deep roots that multiculturalism presents in society.

It is also the education of all the aspects that are related to the coexistence in a multicultural society, in which the exchange and the communication are fundamental pieces in the whole process of education. In this sense, these values ​​and attitudes must be object of knowledge and learning by the entire school population. It is a process that dignifies the multicultural nature of the society in which we live and, as an agent of change, examines the connections between power and knowledge. Its ultimate goal is to provide boys and girls with the necessary skills to enable them to function competently within multiple cultures.
