Christopher Columbus wasn’t the great man everyone though he was. He was a cruel and greedy person. He was more of a criminal. Columbus landed in the Bahamas he met a kind and friendly people who had no weaponry due to the fact that they never had any crime. He took their land for Spain and had the Native Americans work in gold mines. He even sold the girls into sexual slavery due to the high market for it. Especially for girls the age of 9-10. The people not sold into slavery were kept and treated as his own slaves. Anyone that defied him had their ears and nose cut off.
Columbus’ second trip back to the New World was even worse for the Indians. He brought dogs and cannons with him. The dogs would hunt down the Native Americans that tried to escape Christopher Columbus’ harsh ways and tear them apart. He even fed babies to his dogs. Columbus also brought disease with him which killed a huge amount of the Native American population. After the Native Americans died off he switched to selling African American slaves. His son was actually the first African slave trader.
Now Columbus’ wasn’t the marvelous and courageous explorer people are taught he was. He was a very greedy man looking for a trade route to Asia that would lead to more gold. But he didn’t find Asia. He found the Bahamas and exploited them for a plethora of gold and wealth. Instead of treating the natives as the people they were he saw them as a way to make money. He was even sent to Spain to answer for his inhumane crimes against the Indians but he was pardoned by the King of Spain since he was making so much money.
According to Bartolome De Las Casas the Spaniards cut off the legs of children that ran away from them to test how sharp their blades were. Some could cut a person in half with one swipe of their sword.
After all of this Columbus shouldn’t really be considered a hero because he wiped out a race of people. He was a criminal that did monstrous
