RECOMMENDATION FOR FURTHER IMPROVEMENT

Based on the information provided about MLBAM’s highlighting and video streaming program, it is obvious that they have the competitive advantage with their unique video editing information system. There is little that MLBAM needs to do to improve their status among competitors. There is, however, ways to further increase their already extensive revenue.

We recommend that MLBAM continue to use their technological advantages in order to work with streaming other sports on their site. It worked great with the NCAA, creating six and seven figures of profit to run its live streaming of the men’s college basketball tournament. If MLBAM were to continue in this path and allow other sports to use their high-tech servers to run their sports, the profits would only increase further. Although MLBAM thinks it is unlikely that these other sports would want to swallow their pride and ask baseball run their Internet operations, it would not hurt to let them know that the option is open and the “ball is in their court”, so to speak.

Making the MLBAM stream straight to cell phones and PDAs is one more way to further increase revenue. The most important technological device today is the cell phone. With all of its many capabilities, it still has room in the market of applications for live sport streaming and highlight/ stat updates. Creating an ‘app’ for iPhones or Android cell phones would greatly increase MLBAM’s popularity, use, and demographic.

CONCLUSIONS

MLBAM is an incredibly successful franchise with revenues generating around $450 million per year.
