Selective perception occurs when people pay particular attention to some parts of their environment to the point where it distorts the reality of the situation. (Berman-Media 2012). At times it can be baffling for me to see how different individuals communicate what they feel there perception is of others. Sometimes your vision and reality may not match others around you and you have to pay close attention to what people are saying and seeing of their ideas goals and values. I know when I use to be a supervisor and we would have meetings everyone goals and values where not the same. Everyone had different perceptions on how they might want to reach certain goals that were being set for the company. I learned working around different individuals your perception will not be the same. According to (Berman-Media 2012) when you listening to people they also tend to think that others share their thoughts and beliefs, so they may not see how their mannerisms are affecting other workers (Berman-Media 2012). I’ve experience this personally people stereotyping in the workplace because they do not have a good perception of culture and the diversity. You have to be very careful you do not project who you are on someone else because of your perception and lack of understanding of others. Projection can turn into a very negative form of communication. So we have to be very mindful and once again pay attention not to fall into a perception style of leadership
