It has been argued that police officers in this day and era should have at least a bachelor’s degree before being hired. Education seems to play an important role in how people function in society in terms of maturity. Should all law enforcement agencies require a bachelor’s degree before employment? The answer to that question is no. The reason being because agencies would not give the opportunity to someone who has the potential to become an outstanding police officer. What should happen is that at the federal level, the minimum requirement should stay at the bachelor’s level because of the responsibility it comes with; that is including the FBI, CIA, NSA, ATF, DEA, and the U.S. Marshals and so forth. When it comes to the local, county, and state level of law enforcement agencies, the minimum requirement should change to at least having an associate’s degree, waiving the GED or High School Diploma requirement. For example the LAPD, the LASD, CHP, and other California police agencies will no long take GED’s or diplomas as a suitable education requirement to join their department.

Making the minimum requirement of an associate’s degree not only gives the applicant a head start in education, including written and verbal communication skill, but it also shows a sense of maturity. Many people choose not to pursue their education after high school because they lack the discipline to do so, lacking discipline shows someone’s lack of maturity. Society needs to have more police officers that are mature enough to handle the responsibilities they encounter on a day to day basis. The more educated and mature the officer is, the better he or she will be able to do their job in a more professional matter.
