INTRODUCTION
Sparkling Glass Limited (SGL) is a medium scale glass container manufacturing unit.
Problem
- Mr Ashok the general shift in charge and also the production planning, scheduling and costing supervisor is going to retire in few months.
- For the last two years the company has made losses
Objective
To find a suitable candidate to replace Mr. Ashok, a person who is qualified enough to take over the responsibilities and effective in making profit. He should be able to resolve the severe working condition issue of the workers.
Options
- Extend the current General-shift-in-charge tenure.
- Hire a new person from outside the organisation.
- Choose from the four shift-in-charges: Khanna, Punjab, Gupta and Gulati.
Evaluation of options
Option 1
SGL has been making losses for the past two years. It will not be feasible to extend the tenure of Mr. Ashok for a long period after retiring age. Therefore it is not advisable to retain the current general-shift-in-charge.
Option 2
It will take time for the new General-shift-in-charge to get familiarize with the working of the unit. So, it is not a viable option.
Option 3
- Appoint Mr. Khanna
He is the most qualified of the four candidates. But his deteriorating performance and his poor relation with the fellow’s worker will largely affect the productivity of the worker.
- Appoint Mr. Punjabi
His rise through ranks saw his productivity and efficiency. Being a good trainer and maintaining a good relationship with employees, he can make the team productive and efficient.
