The internet has transformed the world and many of the industries within it. The music industry is one such industry that the internet has changed. Twenty years ago consumers relied on records, cassettes, mixed tapes, countdown charts and the radio to hear the music that they liked. With the entrance of the internet, it has revolutionized the way music is bought, marketed and shared among people all over the world. It also gives the listeners and the musicians more choice and power.
The internet has allowed for the changed in the business model of the music industry. Traditional music industry business model was the producing of albums for musicians by a recording company. These albums were then promoted through the means of music videos, concerts, advertising and other events. These recording companies were also responsible for the distribution of the music rights. On the hand of the consumer thirty years ago, if you wanted to listen to Micheal Jackson song Beat it you would have to buy the Thriller album. Thanks to the internet all this has changed both for producers, musicians and consumers. Recording companies now place emphasis on singles, one song can be produced and release for sale. These companies can use the internet to scout out new potential talents not only from where they are but from across the globe. The internet allows for the music that is produced to be distributed in a digital format. Producers of music may have to enter into joint ventures with companies that have the necessary technological infrastructure to enable the distribution of digital music. Because of the internet musicians can now go directly to the customers with their music, they can do their own producing as well. The use of the internet allows them to upload their music to different website which is geared to different audience. Musicians uploading their music to the internet can be seen by recording companies who are looking to sign potential clients. Consumers now have the choice of purchasing only the one song they like from an album instead of having to buy the entire album. They also have the choice of joining music subscriptions of a music service that gives them access to unlimited music by different musicians and from different genre.
Before the internet music was stored on records, cassettes and then CDs. The internet has changed how music is stored and shared among consumers from all walks of life. With the internet the music you like can be downloaded and be stored on your MP3 player or iPod which can store thousands of music. Music can also be stored on other technological devices such as PCs, tablets and smartphones. Storing music on these devices allows them to be available at your finger tip to listen to when a wherever you like, as these devices are portable and can be taken with you wherever you go.
