I believe the key messages from this week's reading
Since early 1990s, high-front gutter has replaced low-front gutter as the most popular gutter in Australia. However, the controversy about high-front gutter installation appears in recent years. Opposition claimed the buildings suffered from significant damages caused by non-complaint guttering, while the NSW Fair Trading minister denied the epidemic of guttering failure in 2008, and made a concession 4 years later and offer the solutions for those victims who suffer the problems caused by the non-compliant guttering.
The key points in the reading could be applied to my work in that
The damages caused by the code non-compliance could be significant. As Gordon said, builders and tradespeople misunderstood the legislative requirement, and Fair Trading also confirmed that the problems were not caused by high-front gutter itself but incorrect installation. Realizing the importance of the compliance to the BCA and the severe consequences not doing so is a critical point in this trigger reading.
Another point I realize is that sometimes the legislation is not clarified clear enough to be followed, as the responsible builder the right way to solve this problem is not choosing the exist answer but looking for the correct answer, because in some cases the exist one may be wrong and brings unpleasant result years later. Never follow the instructions without thinking.
The text made me thinks more about buildings and their construction in that
The most important part of a building is its load structure, so a lot of methods are used to envelop it and protect it from the hazard environment. This trigger reading shows me what consequences could emerge if part of the protection system fails. This problem could bring much more trouble to brick veneer buildings rather than masonry constructions because timber structure may eroded by water easily.
For the purpose of gaining the houses a long sustainability, special attention should be paid to those parts which relate to water issues, such as roof, cladding, downpipes and damp and waterproofing. Builders should check the BCA and chose the materials related to these parts
