Intro/ background

In the movie “Drive” actor Ryan Gosling plays a driver (who is unnamed and is just referred to as “Driver”) who drives criminals around and helps them carry out various missions by providing getaway transportation. The film is set in modern day Los Angeles but has a distinct 80’s electric feel with a unique soundtrack including songs by Kavinsky, College and Electric Youth, and Desire. Scenes are shot with a strong juxtaposition of light and darkness and there are many significant, yet subtle, moments that highlight the theme of hope and one's individual human nature can also be one's own downfall.

In the opening scene of the movie Driver is heard explaining to a customer that he does no dirty work and that he simply drives and that is it. As the plot develops Driver develops feelings of romance towards his apartment neighbor, Irene. Driver promises to help Irene’s husband pay off debts he owes to a gang who protected him while he was in jail. After various encounters, including a failed pawn-shop heist where Irene’s husband was murdered, Driver is in a dangerous predicament with the gang now after him.

The last thing Irene wants to here after the news of her husband’s death is the suggestion of a new man coming to live with her. The next scene opens with Driver waiting to board the elevator with Irene. The doors open and a man in a suit is revealed by the parting metal doors. He makes mysterious eye contact with Driver but says wrong floor. However Driver insists Irene and himself board. Immediate tension is obvious as Driver and the man exchange slight looks out of the corners of their eyes. Irene stands behind both of them, still in shock of the news and Driver’s suggestion. The camera slowly pans down from the man's face to his waistline showing the point of view from Driver. A hidden gun is revealed underneath the man’s gray coat and Driver’s natural instincts and desire
