STI MOVIES : ANALYSIS
1. Todo Sobre di Madare
Translated as “All about my mother”, Todo Sobre di Madare is a Spanish movies that deals with issues such as AIDS, transvestitism, homosexuality. The story is centers around Manuela, a nurse, who loses her only son in an accident. She then decides to tell this incident to her ex-husband, Esteban’s father, Lola. In Barcelona, she meets her friend Argado, Rosa, Huma & Nina. The plot revolves around them and delves into the complex issues as stated above.
2. Lesser Humans
Lesser Humans is a documentary directed by Stalin.K which talks about caste discrimination. It deals with the practice of untouchability that is practiced in Gujarat against the ‘Bhangi’ community. Interviews of the members of the community, the officials and the social workers, along with the videos of the work and living of the people of the community has been combined to show the vices of untouchability in the form of a movie.
3. The Day I Became A Woman
The Iranian film tells three different stories about women struggling for identity.
Ahoo is a married girl who is divorced by her husband while she struggles to cycle. She is ultimately stopped by her brothers, after failed attempts by her husband, father, grandfather and priest. The film, in a very subtle way, depicts the condition of women in Iran and hence the society’s attitude towards women empowerment.
4. Ram Ke Naam
Ram Ke Naam is a documentary which unveils the truth behind the Ayodhya issue. It delves deeply into the actions of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, RSS and Shiv Sena. These groups are showed propogating Hindu fundamentalism and separatist actions against the minorities, especially muslims. It contains relevant interviews of the priests of Ram Mandir & Babri Masjid.
5. Don't Tell
Don’t Tell is an Italian Film which deals with the subject of child sex abuse. The movie centers around the protagonist who has been sexually abused by her father. Her memories of the past keep flashing back as she continues to struggle to lead a normal life with her partner till she meets her brother in US. The movie delves into the psychological impact and its consequences of a child abuse victim.
6. Graves Of The Fireflies
Grave of the fireflies is an animated, Japanese movie which depicts the horrors of war. Predominantly set in Japan during World War II, the film tells the story of Seita, a young boy who has to take care of his younger sister Setsuko when their mother dies. The movie focuses on the lack of food, condition of children who have lost their parents in the war and their consequent struggle to life. The fireflies are symbolic as they are used as a source of light and hope for the children until all the fireflies die and are put into the grave by the children.
