“"The truth! Listen, Tita, the real truth is that there is no truth.” is a quote from the movie Like Water for Chocolate 1992. This quote means many different things and may be the truth of the story. We were all thinking it but didn’t say it. This one quote is the life of this story. In the following, it will break down three parts of the movie and how this quote relates to it. First will explain situation number one, which is the marriage of Pedro and Rosaura. Next will be Tita sleeping with Pedro and becoming pregnant and last Tita marrying Dr. John Brown.
To begin with, in the movie “Like Water for Chocolate” Tita is in love with Pedro. But because Tita falls into the generation tradition she’s forbidden to marry and has to take care of her mother until her mother dies. Therefore, she can never experience love. This guy name Pedro finds out he cannot be with her and decides to marry her sister Rosaura to be closer to her. The quote “the real truth is there is no truth” comes in to play because this makes you question, was their marriage real? When Pedro asks Momma Elena for Tita’s hand in marriage and is rejected, but quickly accepts Rosaura in her place he already has different intentions. Rosaura knows of the love Tita has for Pedro but still agrees to marry him. Rosaura had to question their marriage knowing he was in love with another woman, her sister at that. All the signs were there, Tita and Pedro flirted and he even would not have sex with her. Rosaura also had to notice the way they acted around each other and the way Tita’s food touched Pedro’s soul and heart. Rosaura knew her husband and his lover were together spiritually but not yet physically.
Next, during the climax of the story when Tita and Pedro finally “hook-up” it’s not what they both imagined because of the circumstances. After all these years of not being able to be together their love seems to build instead of diminish. The quote “The real truth is there is no truth”. When Gertudis is talking to Tita, as Tita seems to start to feel bad, Gertudis lets her know that there is no truth. Rosaura and Pedro’s marriage was based on a lie.
