Humane Society of the United States: Animal Testing
From the time that I could crawl, I had a heart for animals. Although unsure of where this love would lead me, I knew that I wanted to be a part of their lives and aid in creating a more peaceful world where people and animals could reside in harmony, showing respect toward each other. Through research, I have grown and become more thoroughly informed on the problems concerning the relationships between people and animals. I gradually became more aware of animal testing and the heartlessness and brutality of it all. Because of this, I have decided to write my essay around the topic of animal testing; my position being strongly against it for obvious reasons and in favor of alternative ways to testing beauty/body care products. I feel I have found a very useful source through the Humane Society of The United States with reports written by a committee member of the National Research council or NRC. The article is called “Animal Testing” and was issued in 2006, and published on the Humane Societies’ website in 2008; most recently updated in 2009. Through research, I have found on several points that deem this source as a reliable one for use throughout the process of writing my final essay:
On the idea of Trustworthiness, I have found many useful hints that show this source is of the highest quality and reliability. Firstly, the sponsor of the site is the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest most well known, non-profit organization in the country. Also, the majority of the article was written by a committee member of the National Research Council, which is also a large non-profit organization that has been recognized in many different fields and functions under a number of educational sponsors such as The Institute of Medicine, The National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Sciences. Lastly, the currency of the article is credible considering that the website article was published in 2008. Also, the most recent accomplishment noted in HSUS’s website article on the animal testing alternative research programs and progress, was published in 2009 according to the Environmental Protection Agency's computational toxicity research program website; they being a large government funded organization (“Toxicology”).
On a basis of usefulness, the purpose of the article is to inform the public on the progress that HSUS is making in their attempts to abolish animal testing in the US and create and alternative method for testing the safety of body care/beauty products. The article states current progress in a timeline, the most current point being, “Pressure from HSLF/HSUS secures an additional $2 million in federal funding for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's computational toxicity research program, which is working to develop high-tech, 21st century alternatives
