Organizational Behavior in the Workplace
Organizational behavior is managing and understanding behaviors of individuals, groups, or teams at work (Kinicki, 2015). It consists of using a contingency approach we use organizational behavior tools depending on the situations there is no one way to deal with a situation because every person is different. To be effective we must use what is appropriate for the give situation instead of using just the rules.
There are certain skills that help us manage behavior at work and these skills are soft skills they relate to our human interactions and include both interpersonal skills and personal attributes. The personal attributes include attitudes, personality, teamwork and leadership. The interpersonal skills include active listening, positive attitudes, and effective communication. These skills help us improve our performance and help us either get the job or a promotion. I was recently looking for a job and in all the interviews most of the questions were all about my soft skills on how I interact with others so I completely agree with authors stating that employers are more interested in how well we use our soft skills.
Organizational behavior is important even in a non-management position we need to know how to provide constructive feedback, develop and lead teams it helps us with our own performance and the ability to work with others. Organizational behavior helps us manage our own behavior so we can excel and grow professionally.
Attitudes are influenced by personal values. An understanding of values is important because it helps manage and understand the motivational impact of our values. I did the self-assessment to understand my own values so I can better manage myself to succeed. According to my assessment my top value is benevolence and according to the values and motive in Schwartz’s theory it means that my values are helpful, honest, forgiving, loyal and responsible.
