Carl Rogers was born in Oak Park, Illinois on January 8 1902. He was the son of Walter and Julia Rogers and the fourth of six children. Carl was considered a really intelligent child at school. He was also living a strict Christian life since his mother was devout follower. He had a disciplined and isolated personality among society. His first studies were focused on an agriculture career but then changed to history and religion. Later on in life, he started to doubt about his Christian roots followed by a conference he took at China. In 1924, he got a degree from the University of Wisconsin and joined a Theological Seminary.
After a couple of years on the seminary he decided to attend the Teachers College in which he obtained a Masters and PhD degree. After his PhD he engaged in child study, in which he worked on different problems related to children. In 1940, he became professor of clinical psychology where he wrote the book called “Counseling and Psychotherapy.
Rogers continued teaching at Wisconsin until he became a resident of the WBSI (Western Behavioral Sciences Institute in La Jolla. He later helped found the Center for Studies of the Person. He also kept on writing more books, doing therapies and giving speeches until his death. Rogers dies off a failure in his pancreas caused by an accident in which he had a broken pelvis.
After his death, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize for his work. His legacy remained with his daughter and fellow psychologists who created many residential programs for communications, personal growth, self-empowerment and social change.
