Freud Vs Erikson

Sigmund Freud developed his theory by analysis his patients. After this he felt that the issues they were having resulted from an experience for something that took place early in their life (Santrock, 2013). Freud has five stages of development that are oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital (Santrock, 2013). These five stages reflect pleasures that are experienced as you development from the mouth, anus and then to sexual organs. Freud feels that we are driven by our sexual instinct an if it is not satisfied at a particular stage the person will become stuck in that stage of development (Santrock, 2013).

Erick Erickson developed his theory based on that he felt that Freud was incorrect in development. Erickson felt that our development is based on social influences and not sexual like Freud (Santrock, 2013). Erickson felt that development continues on a person throughout their lifespan which consists of eight different stages (Santrock, 2013).

Jean Piaget developed his theory based organization and adaptation (Santrock, 2013). His theory is based on four stages of development the correspond with you interpreting the world around you and organizing in your mind and adapting your environment (Santrock, 2013).

There is much criticism about race, ethnicity, gender and social and economic status when it comes to human growth and development because these are factors that vary. Over the years that perception of race, ethnicity, gender and social and economic status has changed. For example, before the civil rights movement people of different races and women were not considered to be equal. It would be hard to factor this into growth and development.
