Homeless Parents with Children
In researching the topic of Homeless Parents with Children I learned that the third largest reason for Homeless Families is Mental Illness coupled with Lack of Education (Swick, K.J 2009). Family values are extremely important to most people and rather than giving children up parents find it easier to struggle as a family (Lorelle, S., & Grothaus, T. 2015). Learning this information told me that families are in need of resources more than just food or shelter for the night. Families are in need of long term knowledge so that they are able to provide food and shelter themselves. So I created a non-profit organization that will be fully funded through grants and donations. This organization will provide housing as well as food while the family receives treatment services that will help them to thrive in the future. We have onsite volunteer Counselors that will adopt families to provide treatment while in the house. We will also provide classes on money management and job skills; these will be completed by volunteers as well.
When I first came up with this idea I thought more along the lines of a shelter; however, I thought what makes that different from other shelters we need to provide the comfort of home. There will be house rules and consequences for breaking these rules, this will ensure that all families feel safe and respected while in the home. I also decided that we will be helping a wide variety of homeless families and for that reason we will not allow any Substance Abusers in the home. We want to ensure all families are comfortable
