Chapter one begins speaking of the need for momentum in order to reach full potential in what we do in life. Momentum is the drive that sets us in motion; it thrusts us into destiny. This propels us to grow in faith, relationships, career, personal health, and emotional health. In these areas of growth, there are influences that are verbal and action, positive and negative. Our individual and groups relationships are affected by the positions that we hold—parent, team lead, administrator, friend, daughter/son, sibling, etc. because of these growth areas. Integrity in what we do more so than what we say plays a huge role in our influences as well; the way we speak to someone or react to a situation is imperative. If we do not have momentum, we are living a life of futility or ineffectiveness.

Self-leadership is self-discipline; determining within oneself that the goal needing to be accomplished will be accomplished is the first step. Creating a plan and following through with it is the second step. Self-leadership gives you the power to hammer through the goal and operate in it on a daily basis. Because our dreams and goals do not happen overnight, we have to toil daily in them for their success to come. We can not allow ourselves to grow weary because the obligation is difficult, time consuming, and redundant; we have to push through to the end. Let the end reward and the testimony from the experience be our inspiration to continue.

The acronym D.R.I.V.E. stands for Devotion, Readiness, Investing, Vision, and Eating and Exercising. Devotion is studying the Bible everyday and journaling thoughts and questions from the reading. Our author tells about his practice called the S.O.N. method; it is Scripture he reads that day, Observations he makes in his journal while reading, and Naming practical applications for his life that he finds as he is reading. Afterwards, he takes time to write out his thoughts and feelings in the form of a prayer.

Readiness pertains to learning for a lifetime. Finding materials that relate to what we do and those life-long goals that we have facilitate our learning. We do not become complacent or bored in our careers if we are always seeking the knowledge of others who are excelling at our craft or comprehending the new advances for betterment of it. The latest technologies and strategies give us a better scope of what we do and how we can be better.

Investing deals with our relationships. Family is the priority; this enables us to keep family first. Our other obligations can be prioritized as needed; these can include people who aid in our goals, our career, our interests, and hobbies. Make sure to put first things first; the most important outweigh the leisurely.

Vision deals with our future; what do we foresee for our lives? Our vision is our purpose; without a purpose, the other elements of life do not function. If there is no picture or image of the future, then the past will be
