Improving Organization Retention
Organizations have various needs for Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychologists in reference to the various scenarios of employees, specific needs within the departments being fulfilled by the employees and the morale of the employees interacting with various supervisors and management. Below will be discussed three scenarios within the JC Casino organization and how the I/O psychologist would assess the situations, review information gathered and give recommendations to help fix the problems of the various scenarios to JC Casino’s management for their review.
Scenario 1: Evil Pit Boss Joe
Assess the situation concerning issues dealing with the various dealers and housekeepers and give suggestions to help improve the situation. Some of the dealers have been leaving the casino to work at other casinos in the area, even though JC’s Casino pays better than their local competition. On several exit interviews, many of the dealers have cited the pit boss, Joe, as being “toxic, overbearing, evil, and incompetent.” Joe is the casino owner’s step-son and the HR director, Tom Sneed, is afraid to confront the owner.
Scenario 2: Abnormal Absenteeism with Housekeeping Staff
Assess the situation among the housekeeping staff where there has been an abnormal rate of absenteeism including high turnover of rooms. Many managers working in accounting, payroll, and other departments asked their full-time employees to help cover the housekeeping department by cleaning rooms periodically. Due to the current problems, the hotel had to adjust their check in times from 3 p.m. (the industry standard) to 6 p.m. Customers arrived early and the hotel had to accommodate them by creating a room for their luggage and hire staff to watch over the room holding the customers luggage.
Scenario 3: Abnormal Absenteeism with Housekeeping Staff
Assess the situation where the director of housekeeping, Andrew Keehn, has been working hard to add more staff but he states “good help is hard to find.” The housekeeper’s current hourly wage is comparable to other casinos in the area but because of the staffing shortage, the housekeepers have to clean more rooms per day than their counterparts. The casino owner only knows about some issues such as keeping the dealers and the situation of customers being upset because they had to wait to be checked in.
