Definition:
Psychology refers to the science of the mind and behavior.
What does it mean to be a psychologist?
First before we dwell into this given question, we should have already understood who a psychologist is.
A psychologist is a scientist trained in psychology or in simple terms a person who specializes in psychology.
So what does it really mean to be a psychologist? A psychologist is a professional who evaluates and studies behavior and mental processes.
What are the defining characters of a psychologist?
When seeking the help of a psychologist, we expect him or her to be capable of listening to our issues and determining a way out of our problems. Psychologists must gain the respect and trust of their clients to bear their most secret and personal issues.
Effective psychologists must possess certain characteristics that benefit and help people from different backgrounds.
They include;
An effective listener;
Psychologists have the challenge of carefully listening to what their clients say while locating erroneous thinking that may be the root of their problem.
It, effective listening, also requires asking probing questions for clarity.
Self-awareness;
They, psychologists, must be aware of their issues, traits and nuances before they can assist anyone else. They must also present various suggestions to their clients, in order to assist them to recovery and not based on personal bias.
Educated;
A psychologist must be able to understand humans, human nature and the dimensions of how the brain operates.
It’s the psychologist’s job to stay educated on the various changes that affect our culture and environment as humans, so as to better assist patients.
Ethical;
Psychologists must be trustworthy due to the sensitivity of the information they receive from their many clients, thus they cannot take advantage of their clients’ mental state.
Honesty and integrity are necessary when dealing with patients in order to ensure they get the best possible help.
