I. The notion of well-being
In this part, we are going to talk about the notion of well-being but moreover, the well-being for employees which refers to the physical and mental health of workforce. The notion of well-being for employees means that they must work in good conditions, in a stress-free place, a safe environment. This notion of well-being is quite abstract, although there has not been a clear definition established for well-being. The definition that we can find on the dictionary is “a good or satisfactory condition of existence; a state characterized by health, happiness and property; welfare”. The words well-being, welfare, utility and quality of life are all closely related concepts that are the center of morality, politics, law, economics and of course, human resource management. The word well-being in human resource management became these past few years really important for companies and for employees. The subject of employee well-being into business and public sector organizations is a relatively innovative move. It’s during the late nineteen century that we start to talk about well-being for employees. Before that, we have paid little attention to employee well-being. The subject had to wait a long time to be recognized as an organizational responsibility. One of the first companies to have paid attention to the well-being of their employees is the Quaker Cadbury family, in UK who provided houses and sick pay for them. Today we still have to work and improve the well-being for employees at work.
- The definition of well-being for employee
Only few organisations ask themselves what they understand by this term before embarking on their well-being strategies and programmes. There is one definition which refers to work-related well-being which describes that part of an employee’s overall well-being that they perceive to be determinated primarly by work and can be influenced by workplace interventions. This definition allows organisations to operationalize employee well-being; it limits the term to those aspects of works which are perceived to influence well-being and are modifiable by the employer. The employee well being embraces a wide number of dimensions that can include:
-advancement, -organizational, -managerial, -social and -physical workplace consideration -as well as elements such as people’s physical and psychological health.
