A 1993 Ron Underwood film entitled “Heart and Souls” tells the story of four individuals (Milo, Harrison, Penny and Julia) who died in a car accident, but were allowed to stay on Earth to supposedly take care and look over a boy named Thomas Reilly. When Thomas reached his early childhood years, these four ghosts decided to “disappear” to help Thomas live a normal life, despite the fact that they loved and cared for each other deeply. Many years had passed when the dead bus driver informed these ghosts that their mission was to fulfill their human lives, to correct their mistakes, and to join in heaven peacefully with the help of Thomas. The story ended with Thomas eventually seeing these ghosts again, and helping each of them resolve their problems while unintentionally being able to resolve his own.

The overall message of the movie is that one must live each day as if it was the last. It makes us realize how things that seemed irrelevant at first became the drive that pushes us to keep moving forward. In relation to the topic about the meaning of life, each main character aims to fulfill their human lives by resolving their issues on the thing, person or event that they love and treasure the most. Thus, the meaning of life is to feel that one was able to share that fulfillment with others.

The topic about the fullness of life is shown in the movie when Thomas learned to be a real “person” by putting aside his personal issues to resolve and help his childhood friends fulfill their missions. Moreover, the triple call to holiness is also evidently portrayed in the said film; Thomas and his ghost friends were all able to discover and fully understand themselves, become intimate and close with each other as the movie comes to an end, and realized their mission and purpose to help and offer help to one another.
