Australia
Location:
Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, positioned between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans, south of Asia.
It is south of Papua New Guinea, northwest of New Zealand and north of Antarctica.
Numerous oceans surround it
West of Australia is the Indian Ocean and to the east is the Pacific Ocean.
South of Tasmania and Australia's southern coastline is the Southern Ocean.
Land:
The Australian continent goes from east to west about 2400 miles and north to south at nearly 2,000 miles: Starting at the west the narrow coastal plain rises abruptly, it looks like a mountain range out at sea but are instead the escarpments of a rough plateau that occupies the western half of the continent The northern region is mainly on the Timor Sea, separating Australia from Indonesia, it also belongs to a plateau with tropical temperatures and a winter dry season. Its northernmost section Arnhem Land faces the Arafura Sea in the north and the huge Gulf of Carpentaria on the east. . East: In east Australia are the mountains of the Eastern highlands, which run down the entire east and southeast coasts. The rivers on the eastern and southeastern slopes run to the Coral Sea and the Tasman Sea. South Australia has an inland area largely covered by plains, sand and gibber deserts. The MT Lofty-flinders ranges are the major mountain system, extending north about 497 miles from cape Jarvis to the northern end of Lake Torrens.
4 Major Geographical Regions:
Coastal lowlands: The coastal plain is a 30 km wide strip on the Indian Ocean coast directly west of the Darling Scarp upland running from Cape Naturaliste in the south to above the city of Perth. The coastal plains mainly consist of infertile soil with sand, dunes, estuaries, and a number of wetlands.
Eastern Highlands: The Eastern highlands or Great divide runs about 4,000 km from the tip of Cape York to the Grampian ranges in victoria. Erosion of the great divide has formed the Great Escarpment.
Central Lowlands: The central lowlands are from the Murray Darling Basin and North to the Gulf of Carpentaria. It is mostly flat with occasional higher grounds like desert ranges and mountain ranges (MacDonnell and Musgrove)
Western Plateau: The western plateau is much of Western Australia and parts of South Australia and the Northern Territory. Plateaus are Kimberley, Hamersley, and Yilgarn Plateaus.
