The American Psychological Association (APA) ethics and code of psychologists and code of conduct includes an introduction, preamble, a list of five aspirational principles and a list of 10 enforceable standards that as a psychologist you are to use when making decisions regarding clients and patients. The purpose of the codes of conduct is to protect the individual reputation of psychologists and also to protect research participants and clients.
The five principles are Beneficence and nonmalefience, fidelity and responsibility, integrity, justice and respect for people’s rights and dignity. The ethical standards set enforceable rules for conduct as a psychologist. And the ten enforceable standards are as follows: 1.) resolving the ethical issue 2.) competence 3.) human relations 4.) privacy and confidentiality; confidentiality is your legal right that protects your conversations with your therapist. 5.) advertising and other public relations 6.) record keeping and fees
7.) education and training 8.) research and publications 9.) assessment 10.) therapy.
The article I found that discusses ethical violations was “5 Major Ethical Violations in Therapy”. It talked about the issue of self-disclosure when treating patients and clients in the psychology field. Self-disclosure is when a psychologist/ therapist communicates his or her most intimate thoughts and feelings, behaviors or beliefs to a client. When this act happens the person has crossed a professional boundary.
